Keep planting your summer vegetable garden into June

Published by Mike on May 16, 2015

I am often asked if it too late to plant a vegetable garden after the heat arrives in June. while it is true some plants don’t do so well in the summer heat of the southeast. We still have some heat tolerant vegetables that we can plant . With the summer heat we also have some times of dry weather that we have to be prepared for whatever we are planting. I like to use drip irrigation and a soaker hose also works to keep the roots moist without wetting the leaves.

Most summer vegetables  can be started from seed very easily in late may  with proper watering.

Some of the vegetables that I will be planting into June will be

* Corn

* Butter Beans

*Cantaloupe

*Green Beans  Bush type

*Gita Bean  ,Trellis

*Eggplant006

*Malabar Spinach ,Trillis

*Okra

*Peppers

*Tomatoes

*Sweet Potatoes

*Squash

* Peas  Black eyed or field peas

* Watermelon

The later into the summer you wait to plant the more insects will be a problem. You will have to be aware of when you have a problem so that you can treat if necessary.

By July 1st most of the summer planting should be complete and you can start planting for your fall garden , stay tuned and we will talk about planting a fall garden next month.
